Heya. I hope all is going well with you. If you recall, last
week I emailed you to tell you that May marks the 3rd
birthday of one of my most cherished websites. I promised

In the meantime, a couple of subscribers have been asking me
what exactly is 'Public Domain'. You've probably seen people
on forums asking where they can find such public domain
works. But what is it? And what can you do with it?

What is Public Domain?
=======================

Well, very simply put, public domain is any work that is not
protected by copyright.

There are works that people give to the public domain (often
referred to as 'free content' on the Internet). If you've
completed my 'Truth about Traffic' course, you'll see I've
included a number of resources for this. Just one thing to
keep in mind is that this very freely circulating content
will often be published all over the Internet.

You may also be interested to know that works published by
the U.S. government are not protected by copyright. There
are also works whose copyrights are no longer in effect.
This can be due to a number of situations, like copyright
expiring etc.

How to Use Public Domain
========================

There are many ways to use public domain content and here's
just a few ideas:

- Website content: You can use public domain to draw in
traffic. You can use this content to promote your own
products, affiliate products or through program's like
Google's Adsense.

- Reselling it: People have made great money selling
books (in printed or electronic format) that are in the
public domain. Even big bookstores take works in the public
domain, republish and sell them every single day.

- Make them into a new product: You can use the ideas and
some of the content of public domain works to create new and
better products.

Think multimedia. Books in print can be changed into a CD or
even a video set. Add to the perceived value of the product
by offering different ways to consume the information. What
was once simply a 'book' can now be a complete 'home study
course' or 'training program'.

Where to Get Public Domain
==========================

There are a number of places to find public domain. I
mentioned the 'free content' websites in my 'Truth about
Traffic' course. You can also use the works from the U.S.
government. As far as finding the public domain books and
items with expired copyright, I must admit I'm not so
experienced in this area. I'm also not a lawyer (NO
KIDDING!), so it gets complicated.
